Our Favorite Florida Keys Camping Locations!

Sugarloaf Key

This is one of the kid’s favorite camping spots. We have camped and rented the RV’s that KOA provides. Sugarloaf has some fun activities…but by far the most fun for the kids is the water trampoline…this thing is great! They also have a raft that the kids can climb and have see-saw battles. All of this on a private beach with floating sun pads for the adults. Bring a nice cold drink and enjoy the sound of laughter. You can snorkel right off the beach, rent a boat from the marina, fish from the beach or nearby bridge or take a tour of Key West. Key West is only 15 miles west on Route 1.

Fiesta Key

This is another great KOA site. We usually come down here once or twice a year. Fiesta Key is located at mm 70 and is as close to paradise as camping gets. The campground has a general store, restaurant, swimming pool and is surrounded by beautiful Florida Key waters. Bring a canoe or kayak and paddle around the this small Key. We bring our fishing gear, some shrimp for bait and head over to the dock, beach or flats. Islamorada is just a short trip away so we make sure we visit World Wide Sportsman, a Bass Pro Outlet, and eat outside at the Islamorada Fish Company Restaurant located adjacent to the store. The kids can look down and see the fish swimming right from the table.

Bahia Honda

Formally called Bahia Honda State Park, informally called PARADISE! This place is beautiful, but tough to get into without a reservation. You can pitch a tent or if you really plan ahead, rent one of 10 cabins (5 duplex units on stilts!) But if you can get in there you can:

  • Spend time at one of three beautiful sandy, white beaches! Loggerhead is great for kids because it’s fairly shallow, Calusa, the smallest beach or Sandspur, the largest. All three beaches have bathhouses (Calusa and Loggerhead share one), and pavilions are scattered throughout.

  • The park has boat ramps for those of you with boats, it has bike paths (remember state park, state law anyone under 16 needs a helmet). You can bring your own canoe or kayak, or rent one from the concession area.

  • Swimming at Bahia Honda is truly a Florida Keys experience. Water temp is between 70’s (winter) to 80’s with mild currents.

  • There is plenty of fishing here, try your luck for snapper, grouper, bonefish, permit or barracuda.

  • Snorkeling at Bahia Honda is great. The snorkeling here is great for beginners because the water is fairly shallow (4 ,5 and 6 feet). You can see coral, tropical fish, lobsters and maybe a conch shell!

You can find out everything you would like to know about this park by visiting “ Florida State Parks ”. Here you will get a good idea of the campsite locations, and current price.
