Swimming & Camping
“Is there a place we can go swimming?” For our family, this is one of the key questions while choosing a camping location!
Peace River
When we went to Peace River I told the kids that we could use the pool at the activity center, but they never made it there because at the river there was a riverbank that the kids could run down and jump into the water. It was one of those moments, there I was fishing for bass while 100 yards downstream there had to be 25 kids laughing, splashing, running and just plain old having fun! We also stopped off several times while canoeing and ran around (wear water shoes, there are rocks).
Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness
Another spot we love is Walt Disney World’s Fort Wilderness. We camp there at least two times a year. They have two pools in the campground area; "Meadow Swimming Pool" is the larger of the two and also is located near an arcade and the second smaller pool is located with the Wilderness Cabins. We also visit Blizzard Beach or Typhoon Lagoon while camping. This type of trip can make a visit to Walt Disney World very reasonable.
We also have annual passes to the park and are always looking for ways to cut down on the overall costs. We can get a campsite at Walt Disney’s Fort Wilderness for about $35.00 per night. We also use Buena Vista Suites (Great complimentary breakfast) and Holiday Villas (Nice large townhouses), both very affordable.
Florida Keys
Turning around and heading south toward the Keys. If you would like to go for a dip, well here is the place. Key Largo has John Pennekamp Coral Reef Park, again bring water shoes, there are rocks, Islamorada has a nice beach, pool and cabana bar at Holiday Isles Resort (public is welcome), Fiesta Key KOA has a nice pool looking over the Gulf side of the keys and a nice (little) spot for snorkaling the flats (great for snorkeling). But, in my opinion, one of the best spots to camp and swim is Sugarloaf Key’s KOA. They have tent sites, RV sites and rentals and a great beach. Adults can lounge on floating lily pads while sipping Pina Coladas or Margaritas and still keep their eyes on the youngsters as they leap from the giant floating trampoline! The other great spot to camp and swim is Bahia Honda. There are a couple of nice beaches in the park; Loggerhead is a nice shallow beach for the kids, Sandspur is the largest beach; it is situated on the southeast end of the island. There are three large pavilions in the Sandspur area and a bathhouse with outdoor, fresh water showers. Calusa is the smallest beach; it is located on the northwest side of the key.
